Zooplankton Dynamics at the Northern Boundary of the Canary Current Upwelling System (NW Iberian Peninsula). Prospects From Updated Time Series in the ‘Ría de Vigo’ and Adjacent Shelf

This study reviews research on zooplankton dynamics in NW Iberian waters (1997–2017), focusing on their relationship with environmental variability and their potential as ecosystem status indicators. Seasonal and interannual zooplankton variations at different organizational levels were analyzed, linking them to meteorological and hydrographic drivers in the Ría de Vigo and the adjacent shelf.

Flotsam, an overlooked vector of alien dispersal from ports

The study suggests that marine litter, surprisingly hosting a diverse range of species, may facilitate the spread of invasive species across different marine environments in the Bay of Gijon.

Temperature-dependent growth and sexuality of the ciguatoxin producer dinoflagellate Gambierdiscus spp. in cultures established from the Canary Islands

The study indicates that Gambierdiscus species growth varies with temperature, with G. australes showing the broadest temperature tolerance, suggesting temperature influences their distribution and sexual reproduction may be a response to temperature extremes.

Environmental DNA from plastic and textile marine litter detects exotic and nuisance species nearby ports

The research found that textile debris in the ocean is more likely to carry invasive species than plastic, with DNA analysis of litter from Asturias beaches showing species distribution influenced by proximity to ports.

Marine litter and public involvement in beach cleaning: Disentangling perception and awareness among adults and children, Bay of Biscay, Spain

The study suggests that beach cleanups by locals can enhance awareness and correct misconceptions about litter sources, despite existing perception gaps between volunteers and non-volunteers, and among different age groups.

Marine litter in south Bay of Biscay: Local differences in beach littering are associated with citizen perception and awareness

The study analyzes litter on nine Bay of Biscay beaches, revealing plastic as the predominant waste, and finds that public awareness and cleanup actions vary by gender and beach visitation frequency, aiding targeted anti-litter campaigns.

Alert calling in port areas: Marine litter as possible secondary dispersal vector for hitchhiking invasive species

Publication found that plastic debris, including ropes, can transport non-indigenous species (NIS), and monitoring biota on marine litter could aid in NIS detection.
